Cosas que me hagan feliz

I know this is my jewelry, design blog but I have too short of an attention span to keep it that way.  Yesterday Mexico and the Dodgers won and clinched spots in the World Cup and NLCS!  That was crazy switching back and forth between the games, I missed Manny’s 2 run homer.

Back to the Basics

I started another jewelry making class last week to get back to one of the things I love doing.  I’m finishing my thesis in grad school aarrrgggg! and realized that making jewelry is one of the things that makes me happy.  I’ve been beading, wire wrapping and worked with PMC-precious metal clay but now I’m going to the core of jewelry making and taking a class by Jay Whaley, a jeweler/metalsmith with 30 years experience.  About a year ago I took a stone setting class and with the hecticness of grad school missed a bunch of classes but this time I’m serious and after my first class i love it!!!  I love the teaching style and love working with metal.  The first day we learned how to make our own stock taking fine silver coins and melting them with an alloy to create sterling silver.

Once the silver was melted I poured it into an ingot mold and made my first ingot. Then I made the ingot into rectangle wire using a rolling mill.  The first piece I wanted to make was a bangle, something simple but that I love wearing.  I was definitely inspired by the gorgeous Indian bangles, now that I think about it this may have to do with the Bollywood class I’m taking to hmmm?  Pictures to follow on how that comes out.

My inspirations are nature, viajar, my culture (Mexicana- represent!) and the time I spent living in Barcelona.  I love the colors, whimsy of modernist art and the city in general.  Just went back this summer and fell in love with it again!
